I’ve been reading….and these are my recommendations….

For a literary read with beautiful prose:

My Friends by Fredrik Backman (He also wrote the wonderful A Man Called Ov.) – Not an easy read, but the moving story about 4 friends – depicted forever in a beautiful painting that, at first glance, you notice only the sea – is unforgettable. This one stays with you.

Wild Dark Shore by Charlotte McConaghy – This also isn’t an easy read; there are tough issues in relationships, and they aren’t easily resolved. The ending isn’t wrapped up in a “happily ever after” either. But the prose is so well done, and you will fall in love with Orly and his brother and sister too – plus an assortment of animals on this island where seeds are stored in a natural permafrost “freezer,” one that is slowly melting with climate change. I don’t appreciate the political message about climate change, and the assumptions that are made, but the island becomes so very real in your mind’s eye….as do the people and animals and the dilemma they face. This one also stays with you.

Combing history with a great story:

The Familiar by Leigh Bardugo – I learned much about the Inquisition and what that meant for the residents of Spain, and especially the poor like scullery maid Luzia. A love story interwoven with creativity and a touch of mystery.

Mostly just fun:

The Stolen Queen by Fiona Davis – When a valuable Egyptian artifact is stolen from the museum, Charlotte begins an adventure to not only find the statue, but to uncover the secrets of her past.

We Solve Murders by Richard Osman – Often LOL funny, this murder mystery that pulls together sleuths from a retirement home tugs you right along with them for a fun, creative page-turner.

Love story:

Great Big Beautiful Life by Emily Henry – This is one of those love stories that – though you think you know where it’s going and that the couple will end up together – it’s not a repetitive by-the-book Hallmark in any way. Termed a “sweeping romance,” I thoroughly enjoyed the banter and competition between two writers to get THE interview of the aging star. Loved the satisfying ending too!

Happy reading!
