What biblical character do you think spoke these words:
“We have spoken freely to you, ___, and opened wide our hearts to you. We are not withholding affection from you, but you are withholding yours from us. As a fair exchange—I speak as to my children—open wide your hearts also.”
“Make room for us in your hearts!” (emphasis mine)
What a plaintive, tender cry….this plea for love.
Did you think it was Jesus? Possibly John? Or maybe the encourager, Barnabas?
It was Paul. Yup, the Apostle Paul who is so much maligned.
He’s harsh. And critical—especially of women.
Way too narrow in his perspective and views. Most unfair.
He seems to be far more negative than positive.
Two words: prejudiced bigot.
I so disagree.
Just because Paul had the courage to confront doesn’t mean he was an unfair person.
Those who confront are actually courageous.
Just because Paul believed and practiced God’s directives doesn’t mean he was rigid.
Those who obey are actually submissive.
Just because Paul clearly defined sin doesn’t mean he made up the rules.
Those who label sin as sin reflect what God knew was best for us.
Just because we see Paul’s personality in letter form doesn’t mean he was a distant person.
Look at the extent of his missionary trips, and how he risked his life time and time again. So he could love God’s people in a hands-on way.
I wonder if Paul could write a letter today, would he still pen those same tender, vulnerable words?
Make room for [me] in your hearts.
I will, Paul. I do.
