Anyone else watch Les Miserables on Masterpiece? Even though I sometimes missed the music (from my favorite musical), it was a glorious production – and made me cry several times.
One of the times that tears ran down my cheeks was Javert’s anguish and resulting suicide because of his inability to accept forgiveness, love, mercy. Grace. I saw reflected in his face the anguish of so many in this world. Unable to find any hint of logic or fairness in the concept of grace – desperately wanting to earn it by obeying “the rules” of life – Javert and those like him die in their agony.
It’s not meant to make sense. It’s not about what’s fair or something earned. It’s merely….grace.
The Logic of Grace
There’s no rational way to explain grace.
There’s no reason to it.
No way to make sense of it.
No comprehension in a step-by-step, logical way.
You could try cause and effect,
But that won’t work.
Neither will the laws of physics,
Or math,
Or natural order.
We sin.
Jesus pays the price.
He gives…everything.
And we gather in….everything.
Christ offers up his very life.
We ask forgiveness, and receive.
Iniquity demands consequences, right?
But we receive…
Grace
And Love,
Mercy,
And Forgiveness.
Culminating in eternal life.
There’s nothing fair about any of that.
It’s not rational.
It’s not logical.
It’s grace.
